How to Wear a Tee Shirt Dress

What is a tee dress?

A tee dress is simply a longer version of a women’s t-shirt so it can be worn as a dress. These dresses are usually made of cotton or cotton blend fibers.

They come in a variety of neck styles including crew neck, v-neck, bateau, and scoop. Sleeve lengths also range from sleeveless to capped, short sleeved, 3/4 length, and long sleeved.

T-shirt dress lengths also come in several options from short above-the-knee to midi length and even maxi length.

Some tee dresses come with slits, while other styles may be knotted, and some may have a ruffled edge or a-line fit. As you can see, they are available in styles to suit every age and every body shape.

In this post, you’ll learn how to choose and wear a t-shirt dress. In addition, I’ve also created a video (below) to help you choose the right dress and how to style it.

Are t-shirt dresses in style?

One thing I love about t-shirt dresses is that they never go out of style!

They are perfect for wearing spring, summer, and even transitioning into fall so they are a staple you can have in your wardrobe and wear for years to come.

When choosing a t-shirt dress that you want to have for a long time, choose dresses with simple and classic styling.

What do you wear under a tshirt dress?

Since t-shirt dresses are lightweight, opt for nude or skin colored bras and underwear so that it won’t show through.

In addition, I’m going to tell you about an underwear update I made that has been a game-changer when it comes to wearing dresses.

I avoided wearing dresses for a long time because I’m a woman over 50 and now carry a little weight in my thighs and there’s nothing more uncomfortable than leg chaffing. When you’re wearing a dress or skirt, there’s nothing to prevent chaffing. If you’re wearing pants, jeans, or skorts this is never an issue. So I stayed away from skirts and dresses.

That is, until I discovered longer length underwear. These aren’t boy-cut underwear. They are longer length (about mid-thigh) to keep your legs nice and cool and not touching. They are not shape-wear, either. There’s no uncomfortable tightness because they feel just like underwear. In addition, there mostly seamless so there aren’t any panty lines!

Here are links to my favorite brands and I highly recommend them if you are a woman with a little extra weight that wants to look pretty and feel great wearing dresses again!

How to dress up a tee shirt dress for work

You may be wondering if a t-shirt dress is too casual for work but by combining the dress with other work-appropriate clothes, you’ll have a great outfit to wear to the office.

Opt for more classic patterns and silhouettes when wearing a tee shirt dress for work. Avoid tee dresses with tears, fringe, or tie-dye.

Blazers and cardigans - Not only will layering one of these items over a t-shirt dress make it more polished for work, it will also keep the chill of air conditioning at bay.

Dressy mules, slides or sandals - It may be tempting but just say no to pairing your t-shirt dress with flip flops for work. It’s just too casual and says, “I’d like to be anywhere but here.” Instead, go for more professional looking slides, sandals, or flat mules for the office.

Accessories - You can add a belt, earrings, necklace, or bracelet to give your tee shirt dress the ready-for-business look it needs.

Handbags - a classic, structure-shaped handbag will give your outfit instant polish. I’ve listed a few of my favorites below. Avoid shapes that are unstructured such as a crocheted bag, hobo shape, or fringed bag.

How do you dress up a t-shirt dress?

You can easily take a t-shirt dress from day to night by switching up the accessories.

Go for dressier earrings such as chandelier or drop style.

Add a few bracelets or rings.

Switch out flat sandals for a dressier pair of sandals or heels.

Add a wrap or shawl as an added layer to keep you warm in the night air.
